Women, no matter how sincerely they swore on the Bible, were not trusted as trustworthy, reliable witnesses. In OT times, they weren't considered quite human (kind of like the U.S. considered African slaves in the early years of our country); merely property. One wouldn't expect one's cow, for example, to testify in court.
